Always kind of wondered why David said thy rod and thy staff comfort me? I believe he said that because it's comforting knowing that He is in control of everything, and if a person has the proper fear of the Lord, it will deter actions that would demand a response from Him. I think the common phrase is roughly you need to know that the stove is hot and can burn you to fear it. Jesus also mentions salvation "so as through fire".
