"greater"

(No matter what we consider, Jesus is greater.
Jesus is greater than the prophets:)

Hebrews 1:1 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,
  2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;

(Jesus is greater than the angels:)

Hebrews 1:7 And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire.
8 But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.

(Jesus is greater than Solomon:)

Matthew 12:42 The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.

(Jesus is greater than Jacob:)

John 4:12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?
13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:
14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
25 The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.
26 Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.

(Jesus is greater than David:)

Acts 13:36 For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption:
37 But he, whom God raised again, saw no corruption.

Matthew 22:42 Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The Son of David.
45 If David then call him Lord, how is he his son?

(Jesus is greater than Abraham:)

John 8:53 Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? and the prophets are dead: whom makest thou thyself?
58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.

(Jesus is greater than Moses:)

John 1:17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

Hebrews 3:3 For this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honour than the house.

(Jesus is greater than Aaron:)

Hebrews 5:1 For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins:
4 And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron.
5 So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee.
6 As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

Hebrews 8:6 But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.

(Jesus is greater than the tabernacle:)

Exodus 39:32a Thus was all the work of the tabernacle of the tent of the congregation finished:

Exodus 40:20 And he took and put the testimony into the ark, and set the staves on the ark, and put the mercy seat above upon the ark:
21a And he brought the ark into the tabernacle,
34 Then a cloud covered the tent of the congregation, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.

(But after Israel departed from the LORD during the times of the judges, the glory of the LORD departed from the tabernacle:)

I Samuel 4:22 And she said, The glory is departed from Israel: for the ark of God is taken.

(Then after the time of David, the LORD allowed Solomon to build the temple, and the glory of the LORD returned:)

II Chronicles 5:1a Thus all the work that Solomon made for the house of the LORD was finished:
7 And the priests brought in the ark of the covenant of the LORD unto his place, to the oracle of the house, into the most holy place, even under the wings of the cherubims:
14b  for the glory of the LORD had filled the house of God.

(After Israel departed from the LORD, again, that, again, the glory of the LORD departed:)

II Chronicles 36:14 Moreover all the chief of the priests, and the people, transgressed very much after all the abominations of the heathen; and polluted the house of the LORD which he had hallowed in Jerusalem.

Ezekiel 10:18 Then the glory of the LORD departed from off the threshold of the house, and stood over the cherubims.

Ezekiel 11:22 Then did the cherubims lift up their wings, and the wheels beside them; and the glory of the God of Israel was over them above.
23 And the glory of the LORD went up from the midst of the city, and stood upon the mountain which is on the east side of the city.

(Then after the captivity, the LORD allowed them to return and rebuild the temple:)

Ezra 3:12 But many of the priests and Levites and chief of the fathers, who were ancient men, that had seen the first house, when the foundation of this house was laid before their eyes, wept with a loud voice; and many shouted aloud for joy:

Ezra 5:1 Then the prophets, Haggai the prophet, and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied unto the Jews that were in Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel, even unto them.
2 Then rose up Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and began to build the house of God which is at Jerusalem: and with them were the prophets of God helping them.

Ezra 6:14a And the elders of the Jews builded, and they prospered through the prophesying of Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the son of Iddo. And they builded, and finished it,

(However, the ark was not in that second temple, neither did the cloud of the glory of the LORD fill that second temple  -  but yet:)

Haggai 2:9a The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the LORD of hosts:

(How was the glory of the second temple, without the ark or cloud, to be greater than the glory of the first temple?)

John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

(The Word tabernacled in a body - "a body hast thou prepared me".
When Gentiles saw the tabernacle, they saw only the outside: curtains of goats' hair, as well as badgers' and rams' skins.
They only saw skin and hair, but what they didn't realize, was that on the inside was the glory and presence of God.
Similarly, when many saw Jesus, they only saw skin and hair - but on the inside ...)

Matthew 17:1 And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart,
2 And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.

Malachi 3:1 Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts.

Hebrews 9:11 But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building;

Matthew 12:6 But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the temple.

(Jesus is greater than the temple.)

(Jesus is greater than Jonah:)

Matthew 12:41 The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.

(Both were sent by the Father, but Jesus always did the things that please the Father:)

Jonah 1:1 Now the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,
2 Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.
3a But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD,

John 8:29 And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.

(Both were asleep in a ship in a storm, and the others thought that they didn’t care that they all were to perish, but Jesus did care:)

Jonah 1:4 But the LORD sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.
5 Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god, and cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep.
6 So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not.

Mark 4:37 And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full.
38 And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish?

(In both cases the storm ceased, although with Jonah still in disobedience, but with Jesus pronouncing peace:)

Jonah 1:15 So they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from her raging.

Mark 4:39 And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.

(Both were in a terrible place for three days and three nights:)

Jonah 1:17 Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

Matthew 12:40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

(Both compassed with floods of sorrow, cried in distress to the Father, who heard their voice from his temple:)

Jonah 2:2 And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice.
3 For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me.
7 When my soul fainted within me I remembered the LORD: and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple.

Psalms 18:4 The sorrows of death compassed me, and the floods of ungodly men made me afraid.
5 The sorrows of hell compassed me about: the snares of death prevented me.
6 In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, even into his ears.

(Both were brought out, Jonah by vomit, but Jesus by the resurrection from the dead:)

Jonah 2:10 And the LORD spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.

Psalms 18:16a He sent from above, he took me,

Psalms 16:10 For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

Acts 13:37 But he, whom God raised again, saw no corruption.

(Jesus is greater than Jonah:)

Matthew 12:41b  and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.

(Jesus is greater than all the things that the chosen people knew were great.
Jesus is greater than the prophets, the angels, Solomon, Jacob, David, Abraham, Moses, Aaron, the tabernacle, and the temple.
He’s even greater than someone that essentially has been to hell and back, i.e. Jonah.)

Psalms 138:2b  for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.

Revelation 19:13b  and his name is called The Word of God.

(Since the LORD has magnified his word above all his name, and Jesus is the Word, then Jesus is greater than anything we can consider.)

(But what about where Jesus said that the Father is greater than him?)

John 14:28 Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.

(Does that mean that the Father is more God than the Son? More omniscient? More omnipresent? More omnipotent?
No, if that was true then the LORD wouldn’t be one God, that would be more than one God: a greater God and a lesser God, like the Arians wrongly consider.
So, how is the Father greater?)

(Jesus is the willing servant of the Father:)

Matthew 12:18 Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles.

(Jesus, the servant of the Father, was sent by the Father, and according to him, he is therefore not greater than the Father:)

John 13:16 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him.

(How can this be? Because of the position that Jesus took, that of a meek, lowly, servant, who was sent:)

Matthew 11:29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

(The Father is greater because of the willing, humble submission of Jesus to the Father:)

Philippians 2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:
7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

(And because of that, the Father greatly glorifies Jesus:)

9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
  10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

(Therefore, Jesus is greater than anything we could ever imagine!
He is even greater than anything going on in the world, or any problem in our lives.)
