Since the Lord Jesus hadn't died and shed His blood on the cross for our sins before John the Baptist was beheaded, my opinion is that it was the same as John's baptism of sinners who were told to repent.
However, after Jesus' death on the cross, and His resurrection, Peter says the following:
Acts 2:38, "Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Remission of sins is the absolving of sins or forgiveness of them.
