Adam named them - not 'horse', 'cow', 'giraffe', but individual names, maybe something like, Raphael, Uriel, Jermiel, Ariel...

So he could talk to each of them.

I agree with you, and have thought the same thing.

Also, that for the year on the ark, Noah spoke to the animals, petted them, and possibly also named them.
