NEW YORK BLACKOUT: On Thursday morning, March 20th, at 2:06 a.m. EDT, main belt asteroid 163 Erigone will eclipse the bright star Regulus over
the New York metropolitan area. Weather permitting, observers can see
the star wink out of sight for as much as 14 seconds. This
is the first time in recorded history that an asteroid blacks out a
naked-eye star in view of such a heavily populated area.
Regulus (α Leo, α Leonis, Alpha Leonis)
Regulus is expected to be occulted (eclipsed) by the asteroid 163 Erigone in
the early morning of March 20th, 2014 as first predicted by A.
Vitagliano in 2004. This in fact, is the first time in human history
that an occultation of such a bright star by an asteroid has been
predicted to cross such a heavily populated area. The main belt asteroid will pass
in front of the
star's 67-mile-width, the shadow of which will sweep across Nassau and
Suffolk counties, that includes all five boroughs of New York City and
the Hudson River Valley.
Regulus is
in the constellation Leo, which has a distinctive shape reminiscent of
a crouching lion. The lion's mane and shoulders also form an asterism known as "the Sickle."
Asterism 1.a cluster of stars smaller than a constellation 2.meant to draw attention to the text.

York Times has reported that the FBI has been conducting interviews of
Syrians living inside the United States in response to concerns that a
U.S. military strike against the government of President Bashar al-Assad
could prompt an attack here.
The
Syrian insurgency has become a magnet for jihadi militants from all
over the World, including those living in the United States and New York
City. “New York remains at the top of the terrorists’ target list,”
former
NYC Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said.
That was just months ago, now New York City is once again in the spotlight of militants around the World-

The
U.S. Federal Deposit Insurance Corp has sued 16 of the world's largest
banks accusing them of cheating 38 other banks, now defunct, by manipulating the Libor interest rate.
Libor (the London Interbank
Offered Rate), which is the average rate that a panel of banks say they
can borrow unsecured funds, has become the key rate globally,
underpinning more than $550 trillion in financial products, from home loans to derivatives.
The
global financial institutions being sued broke certain contracts they
had entered into with the now-defunct banks, by separately colluding to
rig the Libor rate to which the contracts were tied, the FDIC said,
which amounted to "Substantial Losses" for the other financial institutions.
The New York lawsuit accuses the British
Bankers' Association, the U.K. trade organization that during the period at issue administered Libor, of participating in the scheme.
The case is in the Southern District of New York, No. 14-1757.
