"poor?"

David was descended from Boaz, who was wealthy.

Ruth 2:1 And Naomi had a kinsman of her husband’s, a mighty man of wealth, of the family of Elimelech; and his name was Boaz.

Then for the last 40 years of his life he was the king of Israel.
Yet, even while he was chased by Saul, David was taken care of, like with Abigail.
Most of David's life wasn't necessarily in economic poverty, so what did he mean in these five psalms?

Psalms 40:17 But I am poor and needy; yet the Lord thinketh upon me: thou art my help and my deliverer; make no tarrying, O my God.

Psalms 69:29 But am poor and sorrowful: let thy salvation, O God, set me up on high.

Psalms 70:5 But am poor and needy: make haste unto me, O God: thou art my help and my deliverer; O LORD, make no tarrying.

Psalms 86:1 Bow down thine ear, O LORD, hear me: for am poor and needy.

Psalms 109:22 For am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me.

Is David describing a spiritual condition, rather than an economic one?
Would that be similar to:

Matthew 5:3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Is it like a humble state of the heart?
