A problem with that thought is that Israel has always waited for the Messiah to set up his Kingdom here on earth.

That is why they were so confused when he was taken from the earth.

BTW they are still waiting for him to set up His kingdom here

Christians are waiting for Him to return and take us from the earth.

Just like the parable of the 10 virgins who are waiting for him

He takes 5 of them with him and leaves the other 5 here on earth

We have to be careful not too avoid the difficulty warnings in the New Testament aimed at Christians who have become careless and have fallen asleep

There are consequences that can not be denied.
