While the headline is a bit sensational, it is not a new thing.  It happens every once in a while, especially in NE Arizona, Colorado, etc.  Since plague is not a virus, but a bacterial infection, it can be treated with antibiotics.  Diagnosed early enough and properly treated, it is not the danger it was in the dark ages.
