Genesis 18:23 And Abraham drew near, and said, Wilt thou also destroy the righteous with the wicked?32 And he said, Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak yet but this once: Peradventure ten shall be found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for ten’s sake.
(I once heard rescue mission pastor Mike Davis mention that Lot's family totaled 10, so I then looked at it myself, and agreed.)
Genesis 19:8a Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man;12 And the men said unto Lot, Hast thou here any besides? son in law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring them out of this place:14 And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons in law.15a And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here;
(Lot had two unmarried daughters. Then the angels mentioned Lot's sons, at least two. Then Lot went to speak with his sons in law, at least two, which married his other daughters, also at least two. Then there was Lot's wife and also Lot.That makes at least 10: Lot & his wife, sons, married daughters, sons in law, and unmarried daughters.Had Lot reached his family for the LORD, not only would they have all survived, but even Sodom and Gomorrah would not have been destroyed. Is that kind of a prophetic picture of, or at least an example for, us, with our families, today?)
(Now most of us are aghast at what Lot said about his daughters:)
Genesis 19:8 Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof.
(Except most of us have willingly turned our daughters over to wicked, ungodly universities, and even nowadays in public K-12 schools. We let them be taught that the first few chapters of the Bible are a lie.We let them be indoctrinated with all kinds of immoral thinking, and even lately to be groomed for unimaginable wickedness.)
(But, yet, it still says about Lot:)
II Peter 2:6 And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly;7 And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked:8 (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;)
(It says that Lot was just and righteous. This was long before the cross and the gospel of grace, but it kind of appears as something a little like imputed righteousness.Apparently, because of that, Lot was unable to bear the ungodliness around him.It doesn't mention anyone else in his family being vexed by it.His wife looked back, so that would leave his two surviving daughters to consider. He thought that they were still virgins, but what they did to, and then with, their father, kind of showed a level of experience that they shouldn't really have had.Which leaves Lot, which goes along with Peter mentioning only one righteous person, which is sadly less than ten righteous.)
(Was Lot's escape related in anyway to his attitude about the wickedness around him?)
II Peter 2:7 And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked:8 (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;)
(Is this not similar to what happened in Jerusalem?)
Ezekiel 9:4 And the LORD said unto him, Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and set a mark upon the foreheads of the men that sigh and that cry for all the abominations that be done in the midst thereof.5 And to the others he said in mine hearing, Go ye after him through the city, and smite: let not your eye spare, neither have ye pity:6 Slay utterly old and young, both maids, and little children, and women: but come not near any man upon whom is the mark; and begin at my sanctuary. Then they began at the ancient men which were before the house.
(So, if there is judgment in our time, and if that judgment even precedes the blessed hope, will having that attitude against the wickedness around us, be a good and wise way to be?)
II Kings 22:19 Because thine heart was tender, and thou hast humbled thyself before the LORD, when thou heardest what I spake against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, that they should become a desolation and a curse, and hast rent thy clothes, and wept before me; I also have heard thee, saith the LORD.20 Behold therefore, I will gather thee unto thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered into thy grave in peace; and thine eyes shall not see all the evil which I will bring upon this place. And they brought the king word again.
(Josiah escaped the coming judgment, and was allowed to die in battle, instead.Would it not be better for any of us, to pass on earlier, than to face national judgment: famine, war, pestilence, burning, and other terrible things? What attitude should we have in response to the wickedness around us?How about for those millions of innocents, brutally slain in their mothers' wombs, do we have an attitude similar to the following:)
Jeremiah 9:1 Oh that my head were waters, and mine eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people!
(How many tears have we actually shed for them? Not simply disagreeing with the murders, and not simply protesting them, but weeping before Jesus on behalf of the innocents?)
Psalms 119:53 Horror hath taken hold upon me because of the wicked that forsake thy law.136 Rivers of waters run down mine eyes, because they keep not thy law.
(What about in response to all the immoral wickedness? Fornication, adultery, sodomy, gender mutilation, and even worse things?Do we we have an attitude like Ezra, Jeremiah, and Daniel had in response to the wickedness of their day?)
Ezra 9:3 And when I heard this thing, I rent my garment and my mantle, and plucked off the hair of my head and of my beard, and sat down astonied.5 And at the evening sacrifice I arose up from my heaviness; and having rent my garment and my mantle, I fell upon my knees, and spread out my hands unto the LORD my God,6 And said, O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to thee, my God: for our iniquities are increased over our head, and our trespass is grown up unto the heavens.
Jeremiah 3:25 We lie down in our shame, and our confusion covereth us: for we have sinned against the LORD our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even unto this day, and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God.
Jeremiah 14:20 We acknowledge, O LORD, our wickedness, and the iniquity of our fathers: for we have sinned against thee.
Lamentations 5:16 The crown is fallen from our head: woe unto us, that we have sinned!
Daniel 9:8 O Lord, to us belongeth confusion of face, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because we have sinned against thee.
(How many actual tears have we shed over the wickedness around us? Not disagreeing with it, nor protesting it, nor even voting for a seemingly less wicked party?)
