"Reply To Jovial About Pope Francis Name"

Dear Joe,

In your post on 5 Doves on January 23, 2014, you say that our current popes middle name is not Peter and that we have to admit that St Malachy was wrong.  I beg to differ with you.

Our new pope took the name of "Francis" in honor or St Francis of Assisi.  The full name of St. Francis of Assisi was Giovanni di Pietro Bernardone.  Here is a quote from Wikipedia as reference and proof:

Saint Francis of Assisi (Italian: San Francesco d'Assisi, born Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone, but nicknamed Francesco ("the Frenchman") by his father, 1181/1182 – October 3, 1226)[1][3] was an Italian Catholic friar and preacher. He founded the men's Order of Friars Minor, the women’s Order of St. Clare, and theThird Order of Saint Francis for men and women not able to live the lives of itinerant preachers followed by the early members of the Order of Friars Minor or the monastic lives of the Poor Clares.[1] Though he was never ordained to the Catholic priesthood, Francis is one of the most venerated religious figures in history.[1]

Pietro is Italian for Peter.  The new pope is now, officially, Pope Peter Francis - Peter The Roman.

Prophecy Fulfilled.

"Peter the Roman and Pope Jorge Mario Bergoglio"

In re the post at http://www.fivedoves.com/letters/jan2014/paulw119.htm , the present pope's given name is Jorge Mario Bergoglio.  His middle name is not "Peter".

Traditionally, the Catholic Church has had a habit of picking Roman Popes until recently.  The last few popes have been from outside Rome.  So he's neither a "Peter" nor a Roman.  Perhaps we should simply consider the idea that Malachy was simply wrong.

Shalom, Joe
