The
M7.2 quake occurred about 93 miles west of the capital
of Port-au-Prince
and was felt in the capital, also in Jamaica, Cuba, and
Dominican Republic.
Some
news agencies have incorrectly reported the quake striking
off-coast. It did not. The quake struck inland.
The
M7.2 quake is approximately 20 times stronger
than the M7.0 quake that devastated the island back in
2010. Multiple aftershocks are now striking the island. A
tsunami alert was briefly issued following the quake
as a precautionary measure but no tsunami has occurred.
High
numbers of casualties are expected.
