A
very powerful
M7.5 quake has struck off coast in the South
Sandwich Islands, southeast of the southern tip of
South America. This is an area that gets hit on a
regular basis with M5.0-5.5 quakes, and the
occasional "Big One." This quake is indeed a "Big One" and
as far as I am able to discover is the largest earthquake to
strike there since 1929!
Aftershocks
are now occurring. The region is very sparsely populated. No
tsunami warnings have been issued.
The
quakes in this region usually result from a
"re-accumulation" of quake magnitudes happening across the
entire
South American continent in the days prior to the
quake.
