The answer is NO.  You can not take the number of the beast 666 and escape being eternally punished, but the reason I bring this up is because many years ago I bought a book about 666 & the mark of the beast which was being promoted by a Christian ministry in their magazine.  The author's book claimed that a person could take the number of the beast in order to buy and sell because the number of the beast was left out of Rev. 14:9-10 which says, "And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:" 

However, the number of the beast's name was already mentioned in Rev. 13:16-17 which says, "And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name." 

I knew that it was not true that a person could take the number of the beast so I wrote the editor of the magazine and pointed out Rev. 15:2 which says, "And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire: and them that had gotten the victory over the beast, and over his image, and over his mark, and over the number of his name, stand on the sea of glass, having the harps of God." These people had gotten victory over the beast, and over his image, and over his mark, and over the number of his name by not worshipping the beast and not taking his mark in the right hand or in the forehead.  The editor at that time did not acknowledge that this was correct. All he did was write back and ask the question as to who would be left alive on Earth to repopulate the planet then if all on earth had taken the mark of the beast, the name of the beast or the number of his name.   I guess he never thought about the woman (Israel) fleeing into the wilderness when the abomination of desolation is set up.  

Anyway I never renewed my subscription again to the magazine, and hopefully copies of his book were pulled from circulation.  I threw my copy of the book that I bought into the garbage because normally I donate my books to the local library, and I didn't want anyone else to read the book nor did I want to believe the lie that a person could take the number of the beast in order to buy and sell during the great tribulation and not suffer the eternal and harsh consequences of being forever separated from God & being tormented with fire and brimstone  in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb.  I hope anyone else reading the book at the time did not fall for the lie presented in the book because the author's idea mentally added words to the book of Revelation.  A person really needs to know the scriptures in the Bible in order to separate fact from fiction.
