In Mark 9:29, Jesus gave us the stick of dynamite by which we apply the power of the Holy Spirit. It is by humbling ourselves through fasting and prayer.
When we fast and pray in earnest, we become a conduit of the empowering grace of God.
Fasting means to go without something (usually food) as a sacrificial offering in behalf of a miraculous outcome.
Esther fasted 3 days(Esther 4: 16).Any length of time may be chosen(One meal, one favorite item of food, one day etc).It must be a free will offering according to common sense and stamina, or ability.
In Scripture the word "earnest" means a down- payment.
In older days, before credit cards, if a person wanted to purchase an item beyond their means, they made a down payment--a token amount of the purchase price--to show that they were earnest in their commitment.
"The earnest prayer of a righteous man has great power and wonderful results."James 5:16 Living Bible
The earnest prayer here implies the sacrificial fasting of giving up some item usually desired.
